The Book of Changes is a representation of images. The images are the ultimate of things; they pervade them and contain them. The changes indicate the possible changes of things. The transformations of the Changes can be used to ascertain the signs of the divine through the analogies of the phenomena of the myriad things. Thus one can achieve communication with the divine and human realms. The Changes is a book; although it is comprehensive, it is not superfluous.
The principles of Heaven are revealed in man; and the human mind is the key to unlock the mysteries of Heaven. Thus, 'they are bound together, each relying upon the other, and neither being dispensable.'"
The construct of the Changes uses five in combination with ten (fifty) to signify heaven, and divides the remaining forty-nine to represent the myriad things. The images are divided into two to represent duality; three is represented by the three strokes of a hexagram; four is represented by using four lines to symbolize the four seasons; intercalary months are represented by means of leap months inserted after every five years. As heaven spontaneously creates water, water spontaneously creates wood; wood spontaneously creates fire; fire spontaneously creates earth; earth spontaneously creates metal; and metal spontaneously creates water. This is the chain sequence of the five elements. Pursing this you are able to communicate with the divine; conforming to it you are able accomplish the aspirations of humanity. In so doing it is only necessary to use the heart; the efficacy depends upon knowing this operation of the divine so as to give expression to it.
